In this new installment of the Rocky series, Rocky Balboa returns to the ring to fight the present world champion... It's been many years since Rocky Balboa has been in the ring. Through that time his wife Adrian died of cancer, and he and his son, Rocky Jr., have been growing apart. Rocky owns his own deli, and people will come in just to hear his stories. Now ESPN is holding these virtual boxing matches pairing up fighters from different eras, it is a competition. And in the end it showed that if there was a match between "Young" Rocky and the champion Mason "The Line" Dixion, Rocky would win. Seeing this virtual fight makes Rocky remember how much he misses being in the ring. He doesn't miss the winning part, he misses the sport. So he re-registers for his license... This creates a media firestorm, and who should hear about it but Mason himself. Paper View wont pay him anymore because they believe that he is fighting all second rate fighters, and that he's a "paper champion". So his people suggest a fight between him and Rocky. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Widely hyped movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" drew mixed reviews on Wednesday ahead of a weekend debut that Hollywood is anxiously awaiting for a boost to its solid but uninspiring summer box office.

"Too much of what was a good thing," a Los Angeles Times headline said of Disney's swashbuckling sequel, although the full review described the film as "intermittently fun and high-spirited."

The Hollywood Reporter called the special effects "envelope-pushing" and praised Johnny Depp's performance as quirky pirate captain Jack Sparrow, but it panned the story in which Sparrow confronts the evil Davy Jones.

On the Web site rottentomatoes.com, which compiles reviews, the movie scored a 68 percent "fresh" rating.

Richard Horgan, film commentator for Fandango.com, said one of every three advance tickets sold by the online ticket service this week was for "Dead Man's Chest." That is roughly twice the rate posted by its precursor, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," in 2003.

"Personally, I think it's going to be a monster" at box offices, he said of the sequel.

Hollywood needs a huge hit after a string of major films -- "Mission: Impossible III," "The Da Vinci Code," "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Cars" -- racked up solid box office but fell short of the eye-popping business generated by the "Spider-Man" and "Star Wars" movies.

Similarly this past week, "Superman Returns" opened over the long Independence Day holiday in the United States to a final tally of $108 million in its first week, according to the Warner Bros. film studio. The number was good, but not super.

"PIRATES" TO THE RESCUE?
"It has not been an exciting summer," said Brandon Gray, president of Boxofficemojo.com. "There is no major blockbuster everyone can get behind. The hope is that 'Pirates' is that blockbuster."

To date, U.S. summer movie ticket sales stand at roughly $1.84 billion, up 2.3 percent from last year but down 9.5 percent from 2004, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

Moreover, movie attendance as measured by the number of people buying tickets is down about 1 percent from 2005 and off 15 percent from 2004.

That is an ominous sign because the summer movie season, which runs from the first week of May through August, is typically used by Hollywood to launch its most expensive movies and accounts for as much as 40 percent of total annual ticket sales.

The success of "Dead Man's Chest" is especially pivotal. There seem to be few movies in the next eight weeks capable of matching the commercial clout of 2005's July-August combination of surprise comedy hits "Wedding Crashers" and "The 40 Year Old Virgin," which ended up grossing $209 million and $109 million, respectively, box office watchers said.

Despite "Crashers" and "Virgin," last summer's overall box office ended with revenues totaling $3.62 billion, down 8.5 percent from 2004's $3.96 billion, Exhibitor Relations said.

"Dead Man's Chest" is being released by the Walt Disney Co.. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc. Hollywood's other major studios are owned and operated by units of Viacom Inc, News Corp, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) and General Electric Co.

Brother and sister, Trish and Darry are taking the long country road home on a break from college when along the way, they encounter a reckless driver trying to ram them off the road - the driver being a strange looking man donning shabby clothing, who seems to have sinister intentions. The siblings soon find themselves investigating the basement of an old decrepit chapel in the middle of nowhere, where there lies horrors that they least expect.

Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" ranks as the most controversial film of all time, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The magazine ranks the 25 films that have most shocked, disgusted and divided moviegoers, in its June 16 issue, on newsstands Monday.

EW writes that Gibson's grisly depiction of Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion ignited "a culture-war firestorm unrivaled in Hollywood history." Despite or to some degree, because of the religious uproar, the 2004 film grossed over $370 million at the U.S box office.

Coming in second is Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" Kubrick's 1971 futuristic film is famous for a violent scene during which "Singin' in the Rain" is played. Reports of copycat crimes led to the movie's withdrawal from distribution in Britain.

Oliver Stone has the unique distinction of landing twice on the list: 1991's "JFK," ranked at No. 5, and 1994's "Natural Born Killers," at No. 8.

"The Da Vinci Code," now in theaters, charts at No. 13 for the debates spawned by its tale of a Catholic cover-up. Another recent film, "United 93," ranks at No. 16 because of concerns that it came too soon after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

En route across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California, Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, finds himself unexpectedly detoured. He ends up in the largely-abandoned town of Radiator Springs on Route 66, which parallels the real-life town of Amboy, California. McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters, who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame, and sponsorship. McQueen discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line.

It all starts with the final Piston Cup race of the year. Lightning McQueen (a hotshot rookie), The King (a respected veteran), and Chick Hicks (a ruthless cheater) are all tied for the series championship. A photo-finish tie between the three competitors leads to a final tie-breaker race scheduled one week later in California.

After the race, Lightning and his transport truck, Mack, begin an all-night journey across the country towards California. With Lightning sleeping in the trailer, four custom racers play a prank on Mack, causing the sleepy truck to doze off and Lightning to slip off the back onto the interstate highway. Lightning tries deperately to race after Mack but finds himself lost and alone in the middle of the night on rural Route 66. Lightning tries to make it back to the interstate but finds it difficult without any headlights. This speeding car with no headlights soon catches the eye of a small town sheriff. A wild police pursuit ensues, resulting in Lightning tearing up the pavement of the main street in a forgotten little desert town named Radiator Springs. Lightning is caught, impounded, taken to court, and sentenced to repair the street which he destroyed.

At first Lightning McQueen remains arrogant and self-centered, obsessed with nothing else but leaving Radiator Springs and getting to the race in California. After an escape attempt and sloppy road repair, Doc Hudson, the elderly local judge challenges Lightning to a race in the desert. If Lightning wins the race he gets to leave town. If Doc wins the race, Lightning has to complete his sentence and do the work Doc's way. Lightning laughs off this challenge as easy and races to a huge lead while Doc remains at the starting line. Lightning tries to take a tight turn in the dirt and flies off a bluff, getting stuck in a cactus patch just as Doc knew he would. Doc wins the race.

Over the next several days Lightning gradually learns more about the town and its residents. He becomes friends with a dim-witted but loyal tow truck named Mater and with a beautiful Porsche named Sally. Sally shows Lightning why she loves Radiator Springs. She also tells Lightning the story of how Radiator Springs once thrived on Route 66's bustling tourist industry that vanished after the interstate highway was built.

Lightning begins to like Radiator Springs but he remains obsessed with making that sharp dirt turn in the desert. Doc offers his advice but Lightning dismisses the old man's ridiculous notions. Then Lightning discovers that Doc Hudson used to be a great racecar, a three-time Piston Cup champion in the 1950s until a bad wreck ended his career prematurely. Once Lightning discovers Doc's secret, Doc tips off the media as to where Lighning McQueen has been all week and Lightning is quickly wisked away to California in a public frenzy.

Racing for the championship in California, Lightning can't focus as his mind keeps wandering back to Sally and Radiator Springs. He begins the race poorly but becomes revitalized after he discovers that many of his friends from Radiator Springs have come to the race to help him as his pit crew, with Doc Hudson (painted as his old #51 "Fabulous" Hudson Hornet) as his crew chief. Lightning races back into contention and pulls into the lead on the final lap thanks to finally understanding Doc's advice about making that sharp turn back in the desert. With the championship in sight for Lightning, Chick Hicks intentionally causes The King to spin into a horrific wreck. Lightning, remembering how Doc's accident ended his career, slams on his brakes just before the finish line and goes back to help The King. Chick Hicks wins the Piston Cup, but he is booed by the audience and Lightning McQueen wins the admiration of the fans.

Lightning decides to move to Radiator Springs, along with all of his racing operations. Thanks to Lightning's endorsement, Radiator Springs sees a huge boost in tourism and the town is saved.

Possibly because of the success that “The Da Vinci Code” received, Columbia Pictures is now planning on making “Angels & Demons” into another movie hit. “Angels & Demons” was the first novel Dan Brown wrote before “The Da Vinci Code”. This book was published back 2000 and it was there where Robert Langdon was introduced.

As per the movie, a deal was already signed between Columbia Pictures and Akiva Goldman. Goldman is the Oscar winner screenwriter who did the writing for “The Da Vinci Code” movie version. Goldman would also be doing the “Angels & Demons” screenplay. This has been the only move so far. There were no decisions yet as per Ron Howard (director) and Tom Hanks (actor) coming back for this new one.

The film opens in a ruin in Mexico, where a young man finds the Spear of Destiny wrapped in a Nazi flag. He seizes the spear and becomes possessed, heading for Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles we see John Constantine perform an exorcism on a young female teenager; although he is successful he is unnerved by the boldness of the demon, who attempted to leave the girl's body to cross over into humankind's realm. After meeting a detective named Angela Dodson, who wants to know if her twin sister committed suicide, he uncovers a plot by Mammon, the son of Satan, to overthrow his father and reign over both Hell and Earth.

There are many worlds, according to Constantine, of which Earth is only one; it is a neutral place between Heaven and Hell, which have wagered on which can win the most souls among humans. Some humans are able to see the demons and angels who walk among them. Having lived with this ability since birth, Constantine was institutionalized as an adolescent and eventually committed suicide to escape the torment of seeing them but not being believed. Though resuscitated by doctors, he was officially dead for two minutes, which he spent in hell. Unfortunately for the young Constantine, time moves at glacial speed in the underworld: "Believe me, two minutes in hell is a lifetime." He has spent the rest of his life trying to win back God's favor by battling the forces of Hell, though his time on earth will be brief; Constantine has smoked 30 cigarettes a day since he was 15, and is now dying of lung cancer.

After incapacitating a room full of demons, Constantine moves on to stop Mammon from being born from Angela. With a taxidriver, Chas Chandler(Shia LaBeouf)'s help, Mammon is supposedly subdued, but soon after Chas is killed by Gabriel the angel after bragging about his talents.

Constantine eventually takes his own life a second time in order to win an audience with Satan, whom he informs of Mammon's plot in exchange for the release of Angela's sister from Hell. Heaven consequently accepts Constantine for his selflessness, and Satan, enraged at having lost Constantine's soul, revives him and removes the cancer from his lungs so that he can live on and prove whether he truly belongs in Heaven or Hell, having been forgiven for his twin-suicides. His fate now belongs to him, and in the end he is seen chewing gum, as opposed to smoking.

At the end of the film's credits you see Constantine visit Chas' grave saying he did a good job. When Constantine is about to leave the graveyard, Chas appears as an angel and is dressed as Gabriel was previously, implying that he is Gabriel's replacement.

A nihilistic, erudite hitman, Vincent (Tom Cruise) uses a cab to make his rounds one night in Los Angeles. After Max (Jamie Foxx) learns the truth about the man he's been driving when the first mark falls onto his cab roof from a window after being shot by Vincent, he tries to get out of Vincent's way offering him his cab, but Vincent forces Max to drive him all night.

Eventually Max realizes that the marks are key witnesses for the prosecution in a court case against an organized crime boss. Max must find a way to save himself and the one last victim.

Honestly, I was not able to watch the first one. That is why I cannot say what exactly is going on and I could not exactly compare.

On the other hand, it was a hilarious movie. And it surely was fun. And I mean fun. Of course, the media person that I was, I really found the usual storyline embedded in it. It was more of like problem-then-find-a-solution-then-solve-the-problem-then-help-new-found-friends-out-then-come-home-to-his-own-family. Well, something to that effect.

Although it was a hilarious one. Malcolm goes on an investigation himself without the ‘blessings’ from the FBI. He is an FBI agent. And he goes on the investigation posing as Big Momma and becomes hired as a nanny. Oh well, I won’t be going deeper into the whole Big Momma thing. But I tell you, if you are needing a couple of laughs, try this one out.

When I watched Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, at first, I felt like it was just another of those sequels that never make quite a statement to those who view it. However, as the movie progressed, I became engrossed in all the characters and how they lived their lives. I was back at Ice Age (the first one) yet it seemed like there’s many new things. Let’s just say, if I were to compare, that both hold the same kind of funny antics as well as lessons learned.

Sid is always hilarious. Diego has learned to be with his herd, nevermind the fact that he’s still a sabertoothed tiger. More of the story dwells on Manny as his being the last mammoth on earth. The antics of Skrat, though, at keeping his acorn, were quite old so much so that it did not bring quite much laughter to me compared to his attempts during the first movie.

Of course, this new one tells about friendship and helping each other out. It is fun. And it surely would be something that you may want to see. Maybe to relax a little.

Fact-based story of depression era boxing champ James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe). The film opens with Braddock winning a fight in 1928 and becoming a contender for a championship bout. The film then quickly jumps five years into the future. The depression is on and Braddock has had a series of defeats. Fighting injured, including with a broken hand, made him less of a fighter. Braddock, like many others in that era, lost everything in the stock market and scrimping by on the small fights he can get and on dock work. His wife (Renee Zellweger) would prefer he quit boxing, but knows how badly they need the money to get by with their three kids. Watering down milk just to make it do for several more days is a common occurrence. When his trainer (Paul Giamatti) manages to get him one more fight on the spur of the moment against the current #2 contender, Braddock rises to the occasion and knocks him out. His amazing comeback becomes the source of inspiration of many down-on-their-luck Americans. I was shocked to hear that there’s going to be a sequel. Not that I did not quite really like the first one, “The Chronicles of Narnia”. It’s just that I do love “Prince Caspian” when I read the whole series. Really.

Anyway, the release of the sequel, “Prince Caspian”, has been postponed to the summer of 2008. That is according to a spokesperson of Walt Disney Co. So what made the delay? According to the report, it was actually meant to give Andrew Adamson, the director, to have more time to work on the special effects.
